This sunday I have a talk at my teen youth group regarding the eucharist.
I am definitely not one to be talking about one of the most enigmatic concepts of the catholic faith, but thats why it’s called faith. otherwise it’d be called catholic inc. or catholic llc. but its not.
This is in poor order, more of how my mind thinks, in spurts of very disconnected, but oddly related topics.
Source and summit:
Working with kids, I’m usually telling a kid to come down. Everywhere I turn, especially in the playground, there’s always a kid climbing to the highest possible place. Trying to dangle and say OOOOO AHHAHAHAHAHH like they are some monkey to be cool infront of their friends. Little do they know that that actually tanslate into HEY CHRIS, IM DOING SOMETHING DANGEROUS AND WRONG. That excitement doesn’t end there. There are those people that climb mountains for fun. You don’t just wake up one day and say “oh i’m gonna go climb a mountain”. It’s a life preparation, and a deadly one at that. 240 people died climbing mt everest so far. The neighboring mountain, K2, has a death rate of 1:4. There is a sure danger about it and so If climbing mountains isnt your thing, maybe it’s climbing buildings. People make it their life’s mission to climb things, there’s that self proclaimed french spiderman that likes climbing buildings, watch this.
Those french people. Thats what eating snails can do to you. Speaking of france, ladies, what do you think is the most romantic place in paris france is? see! exactly, even you ladies find tall places special
There is two reasons why we see tall places as so intruiging as kids to adults. The first is cus they give us a different view than we are used to. This excitement taps into our primitive desire for life. Long time ago, before telescopes, and satelites, and google maps, Being able to see to really far places usually meant longer lives. The other reason is that We also taunt death by endangering ourselves to prolong our lives. We show death that we can overcome. But that’s a thing of the past right?
Wrong, That struggle is as real as ever. Instead, this mountain is known as the Eucharist. As Catholics, we believe that this is the source and summit of our faith. It is also our salvation from sin, and where we stand unified as a single body in christ.
It all begins in john chapter 6:22. From here until chapter 7, catholics know this as the bread of life discourse. looking directly at 48-52;jesus tells us that he is the bread of life and that we need to eat him for eternal life. Then the jews started arguing cus they couldn’t believe what they were being told.
Now, its not cus they were being told to be cannibals that made them really confused. It really lies in the context. As apart of their Worship of God, they had different types of offerings to him. The most common one was some sort of sin offering via an animal sacrifice. Sin cut a person off from God and his love and mercy. It was because of sin that we stopped living forever and started living for a set amount of years. So a sin offering was made to be the scapegoat of God’s wrath. So that the offender could make themselves right with God , be cleansed of their sins, and continue living life. A priest was the only one that could make the offering. After the offering was made, it was usually consumed by the priest and his family, or sometimes the family of the one offering it. By telling the jews to eat His flesh, He really means eat his body. He also means hat he’s the offering for all of their sins and that since his act is the most ultimate sacrifice, the sins that once cut us off of God as the source of our life was removed. The Eucharist, and taking the Eucharist at mass is apart of our salvation
I bet as I was talking about the sin offerings, you could kinda hear “confession” ring through. like a priest offering the sacrifice, us having to ask forgiveness from God. Thats no coincidence. This is another example of how central the Eucharist is to the catholic faith. Aside from being the source of our life and our salvation, it is also the source of all of our sacraments. These sacraments exist to prepare us to receive, and keep us in a good standing to keep on receiving the Body of our Lord. Just as much as the Eucharist is the core of our sacraments, it is the core of our worship, everything we do revolves around praying and preparing to receive the Eucharist.
At mass, when the priest says” may my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to the living god” he’s not talking about just the bread and wine. we are called to offer things up at mass through the bread and wine. When you see the bread be brought up, place all that you’ve been blessed with and are thankful for. When you see the wine come up, place all your sufferings, doubts, struggles, SINS.
You know that saying, you are what you eat, that applies just as much here. No you are not going to become God or the second coming of Jesus, instead, you become a part of the greater body of Christ.
I can stand up here for days on end and talk to you about the eucharist and what it is. But it definitely does not give it any justice. There’s nothing better than actually experiencing the Eucharist, and Jesus in the Sacrament.
Like I have this wonderful bottle full of fizzy stuff. everyone say ooo, everyone say ahhh. everyone say fizzyy shiny stuff. Now what if I take someone that liked Sprite, and tell them, hey, you want some sprite? Now you will say sure, and take this bottle of sprite and drink it.
And what happens?
Well you can see for your self. You just got chrispy trolled. And by virtue, because I’m talking about God #godtrolled
Now I have this second bottle, of fizzy stuff. Everyone say ooo, everyone say ahhh, everyone say who’s he gonna troll next? Now, I’ll take someone else. And have them drink. And what happens? :D you got trolled again
Now i have a third bottle of fizzy stuff. And i’ll take my 3rd volunteer, Here have some sprite.
NOW GUYS, what do you think is gonna happen? What is in this bottle? Person, please pour a little into these two cups, so we can have our last 2 volunteers see if you’re lying or not. Now take a sip!
What happened? Its acutally sprite. Is he lying? other two volunteers please test him. exactly he’s telling the truth.
And that’s how the Eucharist is. Looks are deciving, it may look like just a cracker, it may taste like stale bread, But its not, as catholics, we believe that it is the body of christ, and the best way to explain it is to experience it. Maybe you’ve had the chance to experience it multiple times or maybe once. Maybe you didnt experience anything at all. But remember, each experience is different from each other. Because you are not the same person when you experienced it last, and when you’ll experience it next.
Just like climbing to the summit of any mountain top is a struggle and is dangerous, accepting Jesus’s actual presence in the Eucharist, is definitely dangerous climb to a mountain top. But at the top of this mountain is heaven waiting for you
Close with john 6: 60-63 “it is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. the words that i have spoken are spirit and life”
